Since 2012, the performance network "Musikkulturen" (Musical Cultures), which is operated jointly with the Kultursekretariat NRW Gütersloh, has made an important contribution to the promotion of world music in NRW. Organisers and ensembles alike benefit from the favourable funding conditions on offer.

An advisory board consisting of some 20 institutions, experts and musicians acts as an expert committee for performances and dialogue projects. It also prepares measures for communication and qualification, develops projects for cultural education and refugee work or concepts for children's concerts and strengthens the presence and networking of world music players in NRW.

For the 2019/21 and 2020/21 seasons, the advisory board has selected a total of 20 exceptional groups for this purpose - also taking into account the participants in the in the "Creole NRW" competition: Avîan Quartet, Ayça Miraç Quartett, Berlin Oriental Quartet, East-West Pacem Orchestra, Hatan, Issa Sow & Gorée, Kaleidoskop, Karibuni, Marion & Sobo Band, Naghash Ensemble, Nouruz Ensemble, Pulsar Trio, RasgaRasga, Shahab Toulouie Trio, Sjaella, The Klezmer Tunes, Transidelia, WeltenBaum, ZMEI3.

Additionally, the project "Spuren nach Ägypten" (Traces to Egypt) can be booked.

An important part of the "Musikkulturen" are the musical "dialogues" between musicians from different cultures, which are financed and organisationally supported by the NRW KULTURsekretariat.

Workshops and rehearsals lasting several days offer the opportunity for intensive exchange. The entire work process, up to and including the final, also sponsored concerts, is actively promoted and documented on film by the NRWKS.

Until March 2021, the dialogue "Alte Musik neu gedacht" (Early Music Reconsidered), which was planned for 2020 and postponed due to the corona, will be continued until then.

In addition, there are plans for a conference in the autumn which will deal with the experiences and possibilities of inter- and transcultural music-making. Furthermore, the development of new digital and hybrid event formats and communication strategies is planned for 2021 - triggered by the corona crisis and based on a call for proposals in autumn 2020 - together with musicians from NRW.

Notes for applicants

Municipal and non-municipal organisers from the member cities of the NRWKS can book performances of the current "Music Cultures" ensembles with a subsidy of 50% of the fee (excluding incidental costs) from the NRW KULTURsekretariat. In the case of simultaneous applications for three or more concerts in one calendar year (01.01. - 31.12.), the subsidy increases to 60% of the fee from the third concert onwards if the performances are spread over the calendar year and relate to several bands in one city. Multiple performances by the same ensembles do not fall under this increased funding. Funding is applied for per performance. From the third funding application onwards, the organiser applies for a grant of 60% instead of 50% of the concert fee.

The concert fees can be found in the current catalogue.

Funding can only be granted if the basic conditions for funding by the NRWKS are met. Detailed information can be found >>here.

Organisers from the member cities of the Kultursekretariat NRW Gütersloh are kindly requested to contact them directly.
