The “popNRW prize” counts among the awards with the best prize money and the highest reputation for pop musicians in Germany.
In August 2018, the NRW KULTURsekretariat already awarded the prize, which was launched in 2012, to successful musicians and promising newcomers from the region for the seventh time.
The prize was again awarded by tradition in two categories, together with the NRW State Music Council. The ceremony was held again as part of the festival c/o pop in Cologne, but for the first time in the Gloria theatre. The prizes were handed over by NRW Minister of Economics Andreas Pinkwart. The event was moderated by the radio and TV moderator Anja Backhaus.
The first prize in the category “Outstanding Artists”, endowed with 10,000 euros, gives the versatile as well as wilful artist Goldroger the opportunity to further work on his way to international presence.
The young trio of International Music had reason to be happy about the sponsorship award for the »Best Newcomer«, which comes endowed with 2,500 euros.
The second places in both categories were acknowledged again with further prizes: the Ströer Media GmbH endowed the bands Grandbrothers and Oteo with media campaigns worth 1,500 and 500 euros respectively.
In 2019, the prize will again be awarded by a diversified jury of experts in the Gloria theatre in Cologne during c/o pop, and staged effectively in the media with the support of the NRW Ministry of Economics. However, there are two novelties: For the first time. the ceremony will be a public event and it will no longer take place in August but in early May.
As an integral part of »popNRW«, the prize also draws attention to this state-wide programme on a national level. »popNRW« is a year-round sponsorship programme jointly developed in 2012 by the NRWKS, NRW State Music Council, the NRW Ministry of Culture as well as the NRW Ministry of Economics and local partners. It consists of several modules as well as workshops and is tailored especially to the needs of young musicians. Tours outside NRW as well as gigs at well-known national and international festivals are part of the performance promotional efforts.
At the beginning of 2019, the transnational EUREGION Music Exchange Programme continues, after having been launched in autumn 2018 with partners in Belgium and the Netherlands. The new partnership with Musicboard Berlin allows bands from NRW to perform at the Pop-Kultur festival.
