Experimental Musical Theatre Fund (feXm)
Since 2005, the NRW KULTURsekretariat and the NRW Arts Foundation have offered selected teams of theatre makers the opportunity to realise experimental music theatre projects in cooperation with opera houses and theatres in NRW.
Concepts are chosen and implemented in conjunction with various NRW stages, in which music, language and space are developed closely connected from the idea through to the first performance, often crossing the borders between musical theatre and stage plays.
With the realignment since 2015, projects were realised that were more process-based and open-ended, with several rehearsal phases within a period of two seasons. Single results and sub-steps leading all the way to the first performance were presented in partial performances, while formats of discourse supplemented the performances. Since then, the focus of attention has therefore been less on the unalterable final result but more on the production process itself.
The “Experimental Musical Theatre Fund“ (feXm) will start its new initiative “NOperas!” with the 2019/20 season. The fond will be thus extended to all of Germany: For the first time it is three theatres participating: the Wuppertal opera house, the Halle opera house and the Bremen theatre.
In the context of this three-seasons-spanning collaboration, one production per season will be drawn up in one theatre first with the support and supervision of “feXm”, and then be further developed in the two other theatres. The Wuppertal opera house will be the first theatre to stage the production in the season 2019/2020.
A jury of certified musical theatre experts will choose the project to be realised together with the involved theatres. The project will be funded with up to 200,000 euros.
Funding will also go to an initiative called “Something Out There“ by François Sarhan, who already realised the project “The Suitcase” at the Schlosstheater Moers in the season 2017/18 in the framework of the “feXm”.
Various workshops at the Maschinenhaus Essen are planned for 2019 in order to intensify the scenic-musical competence of the participating actors of the “Suitcase” ensemble, and to advance the joint search for experimental approaches in musical theatre.
