NOperas! / feXm – Fonds Experimentelles Musiktheater
(Fund for Experimental Music Theatre)
The "Fonds Experimentelles Musiktheater" (Fund for Experimental Music Theatre, feXm) of NRW KULTURsekretariat und Kunststiftung NRW has been the only relevant funding initiative in the German-speaking world for one and a half decades to develop and produce new music theatre formats in cooperation with ensembles in the independent theatre scene and in association with theatres and opera houses.
With the launch of its new funding programme "NOperas!" at the beginning of 2019, "feXm" significantly expanded its artistic approaches and reach. For an initial period of three seasons, three German opera houses have joined forces under the joint label "NOperas! With their involvement in terms of content and structure, they will produce a joint project each season, which will be shown at all three houses in different site-specific project variants.
On the basis of annual invitations to tender, a jury of proven experts together with the supporting organisations NRWKS and Kunststiftung NRW and the participating theatres on the selection of the project, which will be funded with up to 200,000 euros.
For the 2020/21 season, the jury chose the "Kitesh" project of the Berlin music theatre collective Hauen und Stechen. "Kitesh" refers his inspiration from Rimsky-Korsakov's little known opera "The Legend of the sunken city of Kitesch" and merges the composition Rimskis with elements of folk music and the independent sound world of the young Russian-Italian composer Alexander Chernyshkov. The first production house was the Halle Opera (premiere: 18.10.2020). In 2021 the project will initially be performed at the Wuppertal Opera (premiere: 02.06.) and afterwards at Theater Bremen (premiere: 10.07.) further developed and performed.
With the project "Obsessions" by the composer Yiran Zhao and the Finnish theatre group Oblivia, the third "NOperas!" production will start in the 2021/22 season in Bremen and Wuppertal.
The Halle Opera on the other hand is no longer involved in this production.
The project, which is supported by "feXm" with 170,000 euros, is to involve not only Oblivia's performers but also musicians and singers from the ensembles of the participating theatres. Through the use of different theatrical means, the project will be presented in both houses at independent variants in the confrontation with "Obsessions".
